청구회가 가장 힘을 기울인 것은 역시 독서였다

청구회가 가장 힘을 기울인 것은 역시 독서였다. 나는 매월 책 한 권씩을 회의 도서로 기증하였으며 회원 각자도 책을 한 권씩 모았다. 그리하여 '청구문고'를 만들 작정이었다.

The thing the society most endeavored to do was of course reading.  I donated a book a month for the library of the society and each member collected a book as well, to make 'Chung-Gu Library'.

'아아 무정', '집 없는 천사', '로빈 후드의 모험', '거지왕자', '플루타크 영웅전', '소영웅'…… 등의 책을 읽었다. 청구회의 모임은 한 달에 네 번인 셈이다. 매주 토요일에는 자기들끼리 모여서 내가 추천한 책을 번갈아가며 낭독하였기 때문이다. 그리고 매월 마지막 토요일에는 그들의 독후감을 이야기하게 하고 거기에 곁들여 비슷한 이야기를 내가 들려주기도 하였던 것이다. 그리고 가끔 호떡집에 자리를 옮겨서 한 사람 한 사람의 걱정과 어려운 일을 서로 상의하기도 하였다.

  We read 'A Homeless Angel', 'Adventures of Robin Hood', 'The Prince and the Pauper', 'Plutarch's Heroes', 'The Hard-Hearted', etc.  We ended up meeting about four times a month, since they enjoyed reading aloud the recommended books by turns.  And every 4th Saturday, I let them talk about what they thought and felt about the book they read, often telling them stories similar to that.  Then, moving to the pan-cake house, everybody listened to and talked about their worries and troubles.

당면한 걱정 역시 중학교 진학 문제였다. 그러나 그것은 중학교에 진학할 경제적 여유가 없기 때문에 생기는 걱정이라는 점에서 실은 진학문제라기보다는 사회진출 문제라고 해야 하는 것인지도 모른다. 우리들의 결론은 대체로 1, 2년 뒤에 야간중학에 입학하거나 또는 자격검정고시를 치르고 바로 고등학교(야간)에 진학하는 것이었다.

The urgent problem they confronted was, as was expected, entrance into the secondary school.  Considering that it was a concern caused by financial problems, it would be called the problem of finding one's way into society.  The conclusion we reached was entrance into an evening middle school after a couple of years, or going to an evening high school after taking a qualifying examination.
