내가 이들로부터 꼭 한 번 선물을 받은 적이 있다

내가 이들로부터 꼭 한 번 선물을 받은 적이 있다. 66년 크리스마스 때였다. 카드 한 장과 금관담배 한 갑이 그것이다. 아마 이 선물을 위하여 일인당 10원씩을 거두었던 모양이었다. 왜 내가 그것을 짐작할 수 있었는가 하면 손용대와 이덕원의 표정에는 자기 몫을 내지 못한 침울한 심정이 너무나 역력하였기 때문이다. 나는 크리스마스 때 선물이나 카드를 주고받지 않기로 하였던 지난달의 결정을 상기시키고 다시는 이런 낭비(?)를 하지 않기로 의견을 모았다. 이러한 우리의 결심이 크리스마스를 기다리던 어린이들에게 어느 정도로나 수긍이 갔었는지, 그리고 몫을 내지 못한 두 어린이의 침울한 심정이 과연 얼마나 위로되었는지 매우 쓸쓸한 기억밖에는 없다.

Once, I got some Christmas presents from them.  It was in 1966. The present consisted of a card and a pack of Kum-kwan cigarettes.  I guess they paid 10 wons each for that.  I also could guess that seeing from the gloomy faces of Son, Yong-dae and Lee, Duk-won, they could not pay their share.  I reminded them of the previous month's agreement that we would not exchange gifts to prevent an extravagant waste of money and confirmed our original decision.  I doubt how effective such an agreement might have been to them who were counting the days before Christmas.  Likewise, I am not sure how much comfort such an agreement brought to the two kids who could not pay their share.  (As for Christmas, I have only bitter memory.)  

나는 카드 대신 1월 1일경에 이들에게 배달되도록 날짜의 여유를 두어서 사관학교의 그림엽서 한 장씩을 우송하였다.

Instead of Christmas cards, I sent a postcard of the Korean Military Academy to each of them with enough time ahead so that they could be delivered around New Year's Day.
